Word Association Game - Today’s Words - Social Stigma

by Gayla McCord on June 21st, 2008

I’m doing a little research on a project and I know my thought process is somewhat limited when it comes to social stigmas.

When you hear or read the words Social Stigma - what are some of the diseases, conditions and ailments that come to mind?

Please list as many as you can think of.

Naturally I think of:

Incurable sexually transmitted infections

Alcoholism

Eating Disorders

Erectile Dysfunction

Social stigmas go far beyond such a narrow scope.  I’m interested in seeing social stigmas through the eyes of others.

Leave your thoughts in the comment section and lets discuss!

Curious what you’re going to do with all this…but, I’ll throw in a few.

Being grossly overweight, excessive tattoos, debt, a family member who has committed a felony or been to jail, infertility, eczema, drug use, lengthy unemployment (not by choice), bankruptcy, an ill-behaved child, business failure, DWI charge, being a single mom, spouse committing infidelity…

I don’t really consider myself judgmental, but I sure think each of these carries a social stigma.

    how about:
    fundamentalist Christian
    Conservative
    Modest
    Homeschooler
    Large family
    Stay at Home Mom
    and my personal favorite….submissive wife

those have all been applied to me in a negative context.

Slut. (as defined as any woman or girl who has actually had sex.)

Poor. (anyone who might need anything like health insurance or food or furniture or a house.)

Addiction. (anyone who behaves in a compulsive way about anything they can’t really control.)

Sorry, I know that some of mine would not be classified as diseases, conditions, or ailments.

How about mental illness, suicide, homeless, single mum and government housing.
