Where will the jobs be when my kids grow up?
As a parent, do you worry about what types of jobs will be available when your kids grow up?
In just the last week I’ve seen two examples of business practices that are being sugar coated to sound as if it’s best for the people when in reality, it’s a growing trend to cut more and more jobs.
First, at the supermarket - near the employee lounge was a sign that gave the current percentage rate and the goal for customers who use the self checkout lane verses the lanes with actual people.
Umm how stupid do people have to be to actually think pushing people to the self checkout is a good thing? I have to wonder how their employee meetings are conducted and just how they make that sound like a brilliant plan?
Next, I received a letter in the mail from my electric company. The letter informs me that within the next month, they will be switching out my equipment to one which will allow them to read the meters remotely.
Sugar coating reads:
In the near future your electric meter will be exchanged for a new one that will enable our office to communicate with your meter electronically resulting in, among other things, remote automatic meter readings. The advantages of remote electronic readings are many and varied. The new system will enable us to better control costs and yield improved reliability and service to our customers.
I have to wonder if, as the result of cutting so many meter readers jobs, how much of a savings will be passed on to the consumer?
It’s a very scary world we live in. When even cashier’s jobs are being replaced by self serve.
What do you think when you think of your kids future?

Yes, I am concerned about this too. Our son’s science teacher is a real scientist in the field too and he is currently working on a car that not only drives itself, you tell it to go fetch the milk and it does! It’s only about 10 years away for the average Joe, he said. All robotics from building the car to loading the milk to paying electronically. Of course it creates jobs for engineers, scientists, etc., but just think of all the other jobs which are eliminated too. It’s hard to know which fields our children should go in when even people our own age are being pushed out of jobs today.
