The Universal Language Spoken by Children

by Gayla on August 1st, 2007

The whole Florida Gang

While going through some family photos, my kids and I happened on a few that brought back memories of a day my children taught me a thing or two about communication.

A few years back, my cousin and I took our kids on a family vacation to Miami, Florida. While there, we were introduced to several cultures. It was like traveling the world from one location.

While at the beach, my boys befriended a little guy named Benjamin. The only words of English Benjamin could speak were “I Benjamin.” Everything else was in his native language, French.

The boys and I stayed on the beach the entire day and to my amazement, the three boys from very differing cultures who were unable to communicate verbally, played the entire day.

It was truly amazing to watch children interact without the use of words but were able to communicate in a way that helped construct sand castles, ride boogie boards, catch fish and even have lunch.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the lesson those children taught me that day. To this day, Benjamin has a special place in the hearts of my boys and I as well as in our family photo albums.

Have you ever sat back and watched children communicate and interact? I think adults could learn a thing or two that might help reduce the communication issues we all develop with age.
