Teens Get Real Behind The Wheel

by Gayla McCord on April 17th, 2008

Once in a while I try to catch Montel Williams - one of my favorite daytime talk shows.  Today was especially interesting, yet horrifying to me, given my boys just turned 15 and the other will soon be 14.  There’s lots of talk about Driver’s Education going on at my house.

Ken Ucci and Bret Clifton were guests.  Bret Clifton was driving the car that killed the son of Ken Ucci - yet Ken found it in his heart to forgive Bret and take the horrible tragedy and turn it into something positive.  That’s when Get Real Behind The Wheel was born.

I was able to find details on Safe Teen Driver and learned from the show there is a MySpace for this movement.  Of particular interest, I would like to encourage every parent, every teen, every driver to read the details of the accident as written by Marie, the sister of the boy killed in the accident.  She was riding in the back seat and suffered terrible injury as well.

My kids will be adding Get Real to their MySpace and I will be reminding them to check in and read stories there once in a while.  I will be encouraging them to email the group, the people and to ask questions.

I’d say as a parent, allowing my kids behind the wheel of a car is probably the most terrifying thought I battle.  I’m not sure it’s a dragon I will ever be able to slay.

Although doing dangerous is really freakin fun its still dangerous so why do it. If you do something crazy then be smart and don’t push the limit too far cause gosh we can’t stop everyone. just be more aware of you surroundings trust me it helps i’ve hood surfed, i’ve skied behind a truck on gravel, i’ve even hood surfed by myself, by proping a stick on the gas and a stick strapped to the wheel i was able to do it on my own but i too lost a friend to stupid driving just like such, which is why i only do stupid stuff in the open in a field with others watchin me so if i do get hurt they can still save me. If this message doesn’t reach you then have mercy on you sole.
