Tattoo me a prude

by Gayla on November 20th, 2006

GR8 TaT2 MakerYou know, I may be the worlds biggest prude, but what on earth could a 6 - 12-year-old want with their very own pretend tattoo parlor?

It’s one thing to wet and stick an eagle or dragon on the back of your hand, but when you begin learning tattoo art with life-like tools - that’s where I would have to draw the line.

Here’s the product description from Amazon on the GR8 TaT2 Maker:

Product Description
Open up your very own pretend play tattoo parlor. This easy-to-use tattoo maker kit includes an electronic tattoo pen and funky stencils. Using soft, safe pulsating action, the tattoo pen creates realistic, washable designs with dramatic effects.

Don’t you think this is going a bit far?  Or is it just me?

It’s not just you! There is NO WAY I would ever let my kids have something like that. But my husband and I are also the world’s meanest parents because our 8 year old can’t have her ears pierced yet.

    That toy is trash.

I’m glad I’m not the only one!

As for the piercing - I wasn’t allowed to get my ears pierced until I was 12. That was my big “pre-teen” horah back then :)

I wasn’t ever allowed to get my ears pierced, but I did get them pierced when I was 18. Ahh, the sheltered life.

Wow you were sheltered :) So how were your parents on the topic of dating? That is always a fun one to revisit around here. My kids are praying I won’t be anything like papaw :)

Are you kidding? What´s wrong with this toy (other then it´s plastic and look like crap) So none of you evers painted a fake tattoo on your kids. When my oldest son attended a “pirate” birthday party i filled his arm with sculls, crossbones anchors and the like. No, we did´t pretend that we actually tattooed them but he pretended they where actually tattoos. Kid ranging from 5 years now about tattoos. Lets face it. Tattoos are mainstream today. Do you really think they will not be when they grow up? And it´s not only bullies and bikers who wear them today, so don´t give me that crap that they feel like outlaws and cool gangsters or whatever. And… You also comparing playing around with a tattoomachinelike pen with getting actuall piercings. Whats that! Well, I agree on not letting eightyear olds getting REAL piercings, but they can draw their bodies full with PENS if the enjoy it. No blodd, no pain, no risks, whatsoever.

i am a tattoo artist myself and i am here to tell you that in no way is this toy realistic. it’s a damn toy for crying out loud. kids have been drawing on each other for years and years. what could it really hurt?
BESIDES, kids need to know that a real tattoo is permanent and that you have to be 18 to get one. like a right of passage. they must earn the privilage to get a tattoo.

AND…..! it is up to THE PARENTS to teach and guide their children, and not the job of the money grubbing, trend-obcessed, media.
if you don’t like the toy, then don’t buy it.
