SuperNanny - Meet the Smith Family
Last night’s episode of SuperNanny took Jo Frost to Hawaii. First of all, that must have been a real chore having to go to HAWAII to work. I wish she’d have called on me to assist her.
In Hawaii - Super Nanny met the Smith family - Will and Michelle, along with their two raging toddlers Nate and Ari.
To be honest, for a 3-year-old and an 18-month-old - they were complete hellions. I think I would have had to bypass Super Nanny and call in the National Guard with those two.
There’s no reason why a child should still be screaming for a bottle at the age of 18 months and I was appalled at the fact that a three year old was still in diapers! That told me that either mom and dad worked too dang much or they were just lazy in their parenting.
Now, granted, they never said how much mom and dad work - but being that mom had a Ph.D. and dad stated he was getting very close to his, I think we’re safe to assume that mom and dad work hard for those doctorates and work hard to put them to good use. I honestly don’t know how they came to think they had room for a family.
There’s absolutely Nothing wrong with that. BUT what I see more times than not, and I’ve preached this over-and-over is that so many career driven parents are intrusting their children into hands of daycares or babysitters who have absolutely NO interest in the adults those children are going to become.
Perhaps I’m wrong, and it wouldn’t be the first time in my episode recaps, the point I’m trying to make is that WHEN couples decide to have children, they should thoroughly evaluate their situations before having them. Who will care for the children? Who will take an honest interest in caring for and teaching those children properly?
When my twins were born, I’d read an article in which experts claimed a child’s personality they carry into adulthood is formed before the age of four. At that point, I became determined that I would be the one to stay home with my children and see them through to the age of four before I entrusted them in the least to a caregiver.
Another beef I had with this episode is WHY did it become ONLY mom’s job to sit in the middle of the floor, in the dark and keep putting the kids back to bed? Two different nights were shown on this episode and mom took them both. Did dad take his turn as well?
As a final note on my episode reviews here on Super Nanny Rules, this site is not associated with the show whatsoever. I simply take an interest in the show and write about it. The views expressed here are based entirely on WHAT I have seen on the show - what goes on behind the scenes is beyond me. I invite and in fact encourage every family and their community to participate in discussions on these reviews.

I caught a bit of the show myself. I was actually wonderring how come Mom was the only one that sat and put the kids to bed at night. Maybe it’s some sort of consistency thing where only one parent is allowed to put the kids to bed so that it becomes routine? If that’s the case then it looks like Mom is probably going to be putting them to bed for a very long time. lol
My most favorite part of the show was how excited they got when the kids went potty. You would have thought there were chimpanzees running around. I couldn’t help but to giggle on those parts because it reminds me of what I did when Fiona was learning how to pee and poop on the pot. lol You should hear her when she does the entire “woooo hooooo Ma Ma I DID IT - I DID IT” lol
Oh and their son Nathan reminded me of my nephew Nathan. My nephew has that fire engine red hair too. So cute!!

I happen to know a member of the crew of that episode - and rest assured everyone, Dad certainly DID take his turn staying up. In fact I heard a small team of (tired) crew members took turns to activate cameras around the clock and they certainly saw Dad doing an EXCELLENT job. My friends tell me that sometimes the producers feel that it’s better to follow ONE parent’s story rather than both parent’s all the time. It makes it clearer to all us parents to learn from these techniques (and the show IS only an hour long!). Well done BOTH parents for a job well done. I loved that being scientists that they really looked like they were studying Jo’s every move - and taking it all in.

Did anyone else notice that Dad Smith’s voice sounded so much like DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER? I thought maybe they could be related…
