Supernanny Rules

Supernanny Book Review #2

by Cory on July 15th, 2006

Supernanny : How to Get the Best from Your ChildrenMoving into the meat of Supernanny : How to Get the Best from Your Children, Jo lays it out in the Introduction. “What you will find [in this book] are commonsense ways of dealing with the type of ordinary challenges and problems most parents of children under five face most days of the week.” All laid out right there. She admits she has no professional training, and that most of her ideas are borrowed. For those aren’t liabilities in her eyes. They put her on the ground floor just like most parents. “The big difference [between me and parents] is that I’ve had many years of experience looking after all sorts of children at all stages and I’m not meeting these challenges for the first time.” More than training she has experience and perspective.

Next in the book, Supernanny’s Top Ten Rules:

  1. Praise and Rewards
  2. Consistency
  3. Routine
  4. Boundaries
  5. Discipline
  6. Warnings
  7. Explanations
  8. Restraint
  9. Responsibility
  10. Relaxation

These rules are repeated often in the second section of the book with notes that apply the rules to the topic just covered.

Ages and stages
In this part, Jo runs thru a basic “What to Expect” at each of the following stages: newborns, babies, toddlers and preschoolers. It’s much more conversational than the checklist approach of “What To Expect…” and she concentrates on the childs growing self-awareness, independence and ability to reason. I think she’s say these are the three keys to understanding and successfully parenting a child. For each stage, Jo has a few bullet point tips on topics like tantrums, teething and toilet training.

Next: Rules and routines, and Setting boundaries
