Slaying The Dragon: Part II
I’ve decided to make the quest to rid my children of their greed spawned dragons, an ongoing topic here at Guerilla Parenting. My hope is that you all will join me in the quest to foster a greater appreciation in our children. I have broken down each part of the journey into smaller steps. Today, we begin with the first step towards an attitude of gratitude.
Before we embark upon our journey to Gratitude-ville, there are some preparatory measures that must be taken to ensure a timely arrival. A map must be laid out, so that we stay on the right path. It just so happens that my family’s journey will take place during the season of Lent. Since we are Catholic, it is the perfect time to focus on the ideals of sacrifice and gratitude. Even those families who do not share our religious beliefs can greatly benefit from this journey. I encourage you all to make a commitment to slay your local dragon. Let’s take a look at the first stop on the map:
Destination: Graditude-ville
First Stop: Ingrate-opolis, where we identify the problem and our desire to ameliorate it. Sit with the kids and make your current disappointment and intentions clear, in a way that is non accusatory. Ask them what they are grateful for. Point out the things that they may be taking for granted. Make a pact to take the journey together and help each other if someone should start to veer off the path. I am going to read a book that helps to explain my desire and is authored by a doctor who is great at communicating his ideas to a young crowd:

I suggest finding an age appropriate book for your own kids. Mine range from nine years old, down to one, so I had to find one that most would understand. After we finish the book, I will reiterate my desire to be more appreciative by telling each child something that I appreciate about them. Setting a good example is key! For the first week, have the family sit in a circle and say one grateful statement before bed. Next week, we will arrive at our second stop, “Routine-Valley.” I wish you all well on your journeys and encourage you to leave comments on how you are progressing!
