Naughty Step Cleared of Assault
The Naughty Step has been cleared of common assault charges as well as the UK nursery worker who used the technique. Olive Rack runs the Tresco Day Nursery in Kettering, Northamptonshire. One day last year she used the Naughty Step to discipline a two-year old girl who had just hit a young baby with a toy brick. Observers from the county happened to be on hand when the incident occurred, and they thought Ms. Rack was a bit over the top.
Well, magistrates have disagreed, swayed in part I’m sure by the parents of the two-year old who have stood by Ms. Rack and continue to send their daughter to the day care.
I think this is a case where everyone has acted appropriately, and it just takes a bit of time to sort things out. Ms. Rack took reasonable disciplinary measure. The county observers rightly erred on the side of caution when reporting an incident involving a small child.
