Is It The Real Deal?

by kadi on February 27th, 2008

Your child is claiming to be ill. He has no visible signs of illness. His forehead is not hot. He doesn’t have a rash. He is not vomiting. Yet he claims that he is so dizzy that he can’t even stand up. This is what I am dealing with this morning. While I can usually spot a faker a mile away, I am having trouble with this one.

I can only draw two conclusions from his ailment. Either he has figured how to out fox the fox, by claiming to have a problem that cannot be detected by human senses, or he really has a problem. I do not own an otoscope and cannot detect an ear infection. I thought that he was faking when he ordered cereal, toast and sausage biscuits for breakfast. In fact, I threatened him not being able to attend Friday’s birthday party, just to see if I could get a reaction. No reaction.  Then I reconsidered when I brought him food and he no longer wanted it. Maybe is really is sick.

Have any of you ever dealt with a childhood ailment such as this? I could really use some help figuring this one out. Our pediatrician will not be in until 9 am (PST,) and I hate the thought of him missing school on account of the faker’s flu. What do you think?

Personally, and I know this will sound subjective from unschooling me, but kids, like adults need a day off once in a while. Maybe he’s not truly sick but really does need a break. Needing a break badly can be just as real as being really sick. Or, he may be in the first stages of sick, before kids develop symptoms they always seem to have a down day.

I agree with Jennifer. I use to fake sick if I new there was a bully after me at school so that could be it too. love aj

I have not had a child have this problem, but I, myself, have suffered from vertigo. So dizzy and the room spun in so many directions, there was no getting out of bed for me. I always poo-pood people who said they suffered from vertigo until I had it once. I had loads of fluid in my ear - a reaction to the scent of burning candles. (That stuff is toxic, you know.)

So my thought is, maybe he really is not feeling well.

Just wanted to thank you all for your advice. The doc. thinks that it might be anemia. I went and bought some iron fortified vitamins. He did love having a day at home with me, though!
