From Crayons to Condoms

by Gayla McCord on June 24th, 2008

crayons to condoms

Do you know what’s really going at your local public school or are you burying your head in the sand along with many other parents?

In From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth About America’s Public Schools, Steven Baldwin and Karen Holgate let parents, teachers and students speak for themselves about the state of government education in America today.

If discussion about the recent pregnancy pact and images of scantily clad Paris Hilton and Britney Spears makes your blood boil, you’ll want to pick up this book!

In From Crayons to Condoms you’ll discover…

    * The lesbian gym teacher who hands out a paper called “101 Ways To Do It Without Going All The Way” in every class.
    * The “Inventive Spelling” curriculum which demands of parents that they “avoid giving in to our natural desire to correct the mistakes” because it’s “harmful to the children”
    * The “innovative name-calling” program for kindergarteners and first graders that teaches new words and concepts like “dyke” and “faggot.”
    * The required courses in “death education” that actually encourage teen depression and suicide.
    * The math classes in which students write down how they “feel” about math problems…as opposed to learning fractions, algebra and multiplication tables.

Can our schools be saved?

The authors of this book say Yes, but only if parents are informed and ready to fight for their children every step of the way.

The stories in From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth About America’s Public Schools are sure to horrify and energize anyone concerned about today’s kids - and our nation’s future.

I’m sorry but I have to say this book seems a bit ridiculous. I’m sure the cases of these things happening are so few and far between. If it did happen, the teacher would be reprimanded. These are not accepted things in public education. To say they are is just simply absurd.

I wouldn’t call this book ridiculous at all. I’ve worked in youth ministry for many years and am appalled at the things I’ve seen and heard. Within the past few years, I’ve had a few youth tell me that a teacher or administrator (?) at their school told them they could not bring their Bibles to school or wear t-shirts that had scripture on them or said anything about their faith. Now that’s against the law!!!!

p.s. 22 years ago when I was in 6th grade, they were hanging out condoms to the boys. They were in goody bags. I really don’t think things have gotten any better since then.

In Jr. High we used to get a flyer that was called “101 Ways to Make Love Without Doing It”

I have to sort of agree with Kim on this one - it just seems that the aim of this book is to get us all worked up over random cases.. I agree public schools are getting out of hand in some ways. But the majority of the issues I hear about are a reflection on society - and society’s children, not the school systems themselves. Most teachers and principles don’t get paid nearly enough for what they put up w/ and for how much they put into our children’s education.

Also, as over-analyzed as all curriculum has become I seriously doubt that anyone is giving out a pamphlet that encourages depression and suicide..that’s just silly and sounds like someone’s twisting things for inflammatory purposes.

so whats really the issue? kids having sex, or kids having babies???? I know, one in the same… the way to stop teens from having sex, dont let them be in a possition to have sex. We all know teens make more impulsed based dissitions than adults.

What I wish my parents said to me:

“I respect you and your independence, I dont believe your teenage brain”

    “WAIT”

    “STDs for everyone:P”

“Sex is just sex untill you are united by marrige, then it it true bliss, pure heaven, and guilt free.”

“Sex is not ANYTHING like hollywood shows, nor juno”‘

Sex is the most sacred of acts people commit to show their love for one another.
