First Rise in U.S. Teen Births in 15+ Years - Go Figure!

by Gayla on December 7th, 2007

Experts have been expecting a jump and in fact, are blaming it on increased federal funding for abstinence-only health education that doesn’t teach teens how to use condoms and other contraception.

I will admit, I’m a big believer in teaching kids the honest truth about sex and the risks. I believe in giving them all the information they need to help them make INFORMED decisions when they are faced with a situation such as this.

I’m also teaching my boys, when they start dating, that UNLESS the girl they are dating gets the shot in the arm, to never, ever believe or rely on them saying they are on “the pill.”

The pill can be forgotten, or worse, a single malicious act in a time of desperation can alter the lives of two people and their entire families.

It’s just not worth it.

I’m also teaching my kids that abstinence is the absolute BEST choice they can make to save themselves a great deal of emotional stress, confusion and lowering their risk of contracting an STD, but if they do end up falling into the norm and having premarital sex, I want them to do so armed with knowledge that will keep them safe.

I have to wonder, at what age many of those who are teaching the abstinence only programs, began having sex and why they think that kids are actually going to listen to them over the pressures of their friends?

The days of parents scaring the hell out of their kids with the promise of beating them within an inch of their lives (out of love of course) if they do engage in such relations are over. The kids aren’t afraid of consequences or punishment - not when they can make their parents lives Hell with a simple call to protective services.

How do you educate or plan on educating your children about premarital sex, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy risk? And how would you encourage them to minimize their risk?
