Bullied girl alone no more
Sitting in her living room, 14-year-old Olivia Gardner of Novato finds herself surrounded by nearly a thousand letters from strangers who were also bullied or want to let her know she’s not alone.
The victim of extreme bullying that spanned two years and three schools, Olivia rose from depression when she learned of a letter-writing campaign started by two sisters at Tamalpais High in Marin County after they read in The Chronicle in March about Olivia’s ordeal.
Bullies have no idea what an impact they have on the lives of their victims. The scars they leave can last years, even a lifetime.
Patti Agatston, an author and counselor who specializes in bully prevention for the Cobb County School District in Atlanta, also wrote a letter to Olivia and hopes to launch an “Olivia’s Letters” link on her Web site, www.cyberbullyhelp.com. The idea is to gather the names of bully victims who could use some support and launch students on letter-writing campaigns.
The internet can be the most cruel place or the most amazing support. I wish the internet and websites like Cyber Bully Help existed when I was in school.
