Boys and Piercing - It’s not the end of the world

by Gayla McCord on August 12th, 2008

ear

My twins have had their ear pierced since they were in 3rd grade.  I’ve never seen a problem with it.  In fact, it only took them a year of wearing their earring to get it out of their system and take it out.  They’ve not worn them since.

Last week, my stepson decided he wanted his ear pierced.  I phoned my husband to make sure it was ok or to let him know what we wanted to do.  He simply told me that I would have to deal with his parents over the issue.

Deal with his parents?

Whatever!

The last time I looked, my husband was the parent and should be the only one involved in making this decision.

He said his parents may get so angry they’d stop speaking to me.

Hell, if it’s that easy - I may take him to get both ears pierced and throw in a tattoo for good added insurance.

Seriously though - the issue I take with this whole ordeal is the fact that some grandparents take so much control over some families.  Families that are getting along just fine.

So WHAT if the kid wants to get his ear pierced?

It’s one of those things that I’m certain if they experience early on - it loses it’s appeal early and will be far less likely to result in eyebrow or  nose piercing’s etc.

Do you see anything wrong with a boy getting his ear pierced?

For us it is no. If they want tats and piercings when they move out then that is their choice as adults..but not before then.
We have only had one child push that issue and get it done anyway…within 24 hours he accidentally ripped the thing out of his ear while sleeping and decided Mom and Dad were right on this one.
I don;t even let my girls get their ears pierced until their 12th birthday.
    yep…terribly old fashioned.

No problem with boys and pierced ears at all. I remember piercing a few boys back in high school. One of them is my current boyfriend and he no longer wears an earring.

It’s too bad your in-laws are so rigid. That must be tough.
