Behind the Supernanny Casting Process

by Cory on July 7th, 2006

St. Louis Today has a nice story and interview with Joel Huggins, St. Louis native and Supernanny casting producer. It’s a lengthy article that includes several nuggets on the casting and production process.

  • Supernanny is still searching for families to debut appear in the upcoming season, which begins production this month. It takes about six months to tape all of the episodes.
  • The ideal families include children ranging from toddlers to teens. This season in particular the show is keen to feature a more diverse array of family situations, such as single parents, parents with shared custody, blended families, adoptive parents and other non-traditional caregivers who are raising kids. The show looks for issues that are unusual or uncommon to feature. There is clearly pressure to “raise the bar” each season.
  • Application are first reviewed by staff members. Those that make this first cut are put into a pool of families for home visits. At this stage a casting producer and camera crew visit the home film the family for an afternoon. The footage is cut down to a 10- to 15-minute “mini-documentary,” which is reviewed by Supernanny producers for another round of cuts. These finalists are passed onto the network, which makes the ultimate decision on which families appear in the show.
