Are you a sexist parent?

by Gayla on October 11th, 2007

A new study shows that parents/grandparents are far more likely to allow boys to play hardcore video games than girls. In general parents were much more accepting of casual video games for children of all ages. More…

I can easily see this happening in most homes and see it in many homes of friends and relatives - but not in mine! In fact, with three boys and a girl, we treat them all the same. If the girl decides to be a bit on the bitchy side and slap or punch the boys, they have full right to slap or punch back - same in reverse!

I’ll not raise a girl to believe it’s ok to hit and slap because they’ll not hit back, because the reality is, she’s gonna get it!

Same for the boys - I don’t want our boys growing up to think that if a woman hits them it’s not ok to slug her back. Within reason of course. I certainly wouldn’t want them to use full strength, but they have every right to dish out as good as they get.

Maybe I’m wrong, but lets just hope the girls our boys end up dating will have been taught it’s never ok to throw the first punch! Ever!

I agree…I want my children, boys or girls, to think that this kind of behavior is just WRONG! Thanks for the chance to win!

I would hope that I treated boys and girls the same. I have no experience with boys. Only girls

Equality for everyone! We only have a son but I grew up with sisters and a brother and we had to share and work it out the same!

I have 1 little boy but I hope that my standards and expectations would be the same regardless of whether or not they are boys or girls.

I love it! I love that you don’t allow your kids to think it’s ok to just haul off and whack someone without the possibility of getting whacked back. Fantastic!

I agree though. We’ve also taught the girl to defend herself. In this day and age, you never know.

I hope I will not be sexist. We only have one boy so far, but we hope to have a girl too :)

It’s amazing how differently we view our kids and w/o even thinking we allow one to do something the other would never do

I have one son, so he has no one to fight with, but he still understands it’s not OK to punch other people ever.

I don’t have kids, but I do my best to promote equality with the kids I babysit. I wish all parents had policies like yours - it makes the inevitable fights a lot easier to deal with.

I think sometimes girls tend to take advantage of the fact that it’s not cool for a boy to hit a girl.

Fact is, it’s not cool for boys OR girls to throw the first punch.

I too don’t have a problem with a boy defending himself no matter the sex of the one that throws the first punch.

Same thing goes for the girls. :)
